Chilli Chang: Asian Bistro and Rooftop Bar

A new, futuristic building on a corner in Santa Monica houses Chilli Chang, a new, 3-story Asian bistro with a rooftop bar. From the outside, the place looks cool. On the inside, I found the decor to be a little dull. That shouldn’t keep you from going though. The food is great, service attentive and prices very fair.

I went on a Tuesday night with 3 friends. It was quiet, which equalled fast service and very little waiting time for our food. Just how I like it.

We shared pork dumplings, spring rolls, 2x chicken Kung Pao (pictured), 30 pieces of sushi, and had about 8 beers between us. The total bill, including a 10% tip, amounted to $168.000 pesos or just about $54 dollars. Very fair indeed.

Everything except for the sushi was great. I mean, the sushi was by no means bad… but it was kind of flavorless and boring compared to the rest of the food.

Before our food arrived, we did a little tour of the restaurant. The third floor is an open rooftop terrace with a sushi and cocktail bar. It looked like a wicked place to sip a mojito and enjoy the evening breeze after a warm day. Check out Chilli Chang’s Facebook for happy hour and other promotions.

As a little side-note, be careful when asking them to spice up the food for you. My friend, who had already eaten at Chilli Chang a few times previously, told the waitress: “El negrito en la cocina sabe como me gusta mi comida – PICANTE!”.

I’m pretty sure that anywhere else in the world, if you told the waiter that “the little negro in the kitchen knows that I like my food SPICY”, the chef would make sure that you got as deserved. Do I have to tell you that my friend was crying his way through dinner?
