Residents and visitors alike have been asking me many times over the years if I have a bilingual doctor in Cali that I can recommend. After seeing a handful of doctors in Cali during my 5 years of residency, I’ve finally found a guy that is competent, friendly, accessible and easy to get an appointment with in Cali.

His name is Dr. Julián López Owen – an independent general practitioner and surgeon who graduated from the Universidad del Valle in Cali back in 1996. Julián’s career in medicine began with a 14-year stint with International SOS where he became the chief medical officer for camps (oil/mining companies) with up to 4500 people in Africa, including Nigeria, Angola, Liberia and Guinea.

His years in Africa seem to have prepared him well. He has seen every kind of work accident, virus, allergy, bug bite, STD, or tropical disease you can imagine, including all types of malaria, dengue fever, zika, chikungunya, etc.

The part I really liked about my consultations with Julián is that he takes his time to speak to you, analyze your personal situation, and do a full-body examination. Every appointment lasts one hour and you don’t feel the pressure of him trying to push you out the door in order to make an extra peso on the next patient. His English is great, meaning that patients who do not speak Spanish will feel more at ease. Oh, and every single time I’ve requested an appointment, Julián has been able to see me the same day – something really valuable if you’re feeling like crap and need fast attention. Also, if you don’t feel like going to his office, Julián is happy to come see you for a consultation at your house or hotel room.

If you should need to have any exams done, like blood or urine tests, then Julián does not charge extra for the follow-up consultation to analyze the results – something quite unheard of in the medical industry.

Please remember that for emergencies, you should call 123 from any phone and ask for an ambulance.

You can book your appointment on Doctoralia (no user needed) or through WhatsApp.

Passed through Cali for the first time in 2011, on his way from the US to Brazil on a motorcycle. Ended up kissing a caleña on his last night and the rest is history. Has been a resident of Cali, Colombia since 2013 and currently living in Barrio Bellavista with his girlfriend and 2 daughters.

  2. Great doctor. He now has a website with some more information of his services and principles https://www.drlopezowen.com/en. If you had not yet noticed by his name ‘Owen’, he actually has a British connection. Very fairly priced too.

  3. I WhatsApp texted Dr Julian in the morning and he came to my AirBnB by 4. He is a dependable doctor and took care of my issue. He is a great guy and I highly recommend him.

Welcome to Cali, Welcome to Colombia

… And welcome to Adventure! I arrived in Cali for the first time as a tourist in 2011, passing through on a motorcycle. When I arrived for the second time I came as a father and as a resident, without having any friends (except for my girlfriend), and without speaking Spanish.
