As most people know by now, Cali has been the Latin American capital of dance for a long time, and don’t expect that to change anytime soon. The annual International Ballet Festival starts in Cali this coming Sunday, June 7th, 2015 – and goes on for a week until June 14th. It’s the 9th consecutive year in a row that Cali hosts the festival and the event has grown from a mere 4.500 spectators the first year, to attracting 100.400 people at last years festival, showcasing the talents of 165 ballerinas from 13 different countries. This years festival is bound to be equally impressive, and the program shows no less than 37 performances during week. The opening ceremony takes place at the Plaza de Toros (bull fighting ring) on Sunday, June 7th at 7:00pm with space for more than 18.000 people. Judging by the pictures of last year’s inauguration, it looks like something you don’t want to be missing out on, if you have the slightest interest in art, culture and/or dance. The remaining events are spread all over the city in the Teatro Municipal, the Teatro Jorge Isaacs, the Tarima Comfenalco, the Teatro al Aire Libre Los Cristales, La Tertulia Museum and at the Auditorio at the Javeriana University.
Tickets are available here and start at around $11.000 pesos (US$5) and go up to $100.000 pesos, depending on the event and seats. I could not find any prices for the opening ceremony, which leads me to believe that it is free…Yay!
